Etsy now rewards listings with 10 photos. Beyond count, photo quality drives click-through rate (CTR), which drives ranking position. A beautifully optimized listing with mediocre photos will lose to a mediocre listing with great photos — every time.

Why photos are SEO

Etsy's algorithm watches two photo-related signals: 1) how many photos you upload (more = better, up to 10), and 2) how often shoppers click your listing from search results (CTR). Better hero photo = higher CTR = better rank.

Alt text rules

  • Every photo gets alt text — Etsy uses it for SEO and accessibility
  • Use your secondary keywords (not primary — that's already in title/tags)
  • Describe what's in the photo + the keyword angle: 'sterling silver heart necklace worn with white blouse'
  • Keep under 125 characters
  • Avoid keyword stuffing — natural language wins

Hero photo best practices

  • Square format (Etsy crops 1:1 for search thumbnails)
  • Product fills 70-80% of frame (small products look lost in big white space)
  • White or very light background for clean search grid
  • Soft natural light or 5500K white LED — avoid yellow/warm tones
  • Single focal point — no clutter, no extras
  • Brand-consistent style across listings (signals shop quality)

Hero photo is 70% of CTR. If you only optimize one photo, make it this one. Sellers spend hours on tags but use phone-quality hero shots — fix this first.

Video: now nearly required

Etsy weights video listings 5-10% higher in search. 5-15 second video clips work great:

  • Slow 360° rotation of product
  • Hand holding/wearing the item
  • Texture close-up (movement reveals more than photos)
  • Quick unboxing or packaging reveal

Common photo mistakes

  • Yellow/warm color cast — fix with white balance in editing (most phones overdo warmth)
  • Cluttered backgrounds with props that distract from product
  • Inconsistent style across listings (looks like 5 different shops)
  • Hero photo with text overlay (Etsy thumbnails crop it — text gets cut)
  • Photos at different sizes (Etsy requires identical aspect ratios for clean grid)
  • No scale reference (#1 cause of 'is it too small?' returns)

Phone vs camera

Modern phones (iPhone 13+, Pixel 7+, recent Samsung) produce Etsy-quality photos. You don't need a DSLR. You need: good natural light, a clean background (poster board + diffuser works), and basic editing (Lightroom Mobile, free). Total setup cost: ~$30.
