Every Etsy listing has 12 optimization points. Most sellers focus on 3-4 (title and tags). The other 8 are where compounding gains hide. This is the checklist we run on every client shop.

Print it, run through one listing top-to-bottom, then repeat. Most listings take 15-20 minutes the first time.

The 12-step checklist

  1. 1

    Primary keyword identified and validated

    Pick ONE primary keyword (50+ monthly searches, <70 competition). Validate with Etsy's autocomplete — if your phrase appears, you're targeting a real query.

  2. 2

    Title front-loads primary keyword in first 60 chars

    Etsy weights early words heavily. 'Silver Necklace | Handmade Sterling | Gift for Her' beats 'Beautiful Handmade Gift Sterling Silver Necklace.'

  3. 3

    Title uses all 140 characters efficiently

    Most sellers use 60-80. Each extra usable phrase = another search query you can rank for.

  4. 4

    All 13 tags filled with 2-4 word phrases

    Mix: 3 broad, 5 long-tail, 3 occasion, 2 attribute. No single words, no repeating words across tags.

  5. 5

    Every attribute Etsy offers is set

    Color, material, style, occasion, primary color, secondary color, holiday, recipient — Etsy weights attributes nearly as much as tags.

    Category and sub-category are correct

    Browse Etsy's category tree manually. 'Necklaces > Pendant Necklaces' ranks better than just 'Pendants.'

  7. 7

    Description first 160 chars front-load hook + primary keyword

    This is the meta description Google sees and Etsy previews. Lead with the value, not 'Welcome to my shop.'

  8. 8

    Description is 800+ characters with line breaks

    Etsy weights description length AND structure. Short paragraphs, bullet lists, and headers improve scannability and time-on-page.

  9. 9

    10 photos uploaded with alt text

    Etsy now rewards full photo counts. Add: hero shot, lifestyle, scale, detail, packaging, multiple angles, dimensions diagram.

    At least 1 video on top listings

    Etsy weights video listings 5-10% higher in 2026. 5-15 seconds is enough — a quick 360° turn or texture detail.

  11. 11

    Price is within ±15% of niche median

    Use the Pricing Calculator to set a margin that's profitable AND within the conversion sweet spot for your niche.

  12. 12

    Shipping profile is competitive (free or under $5)

    Etsy's Star Seller and ranking algorithm both weight free shipping. If you can absorb it into the price, do it.

Heads up

Don't skip steps 5-7 (attributes, category, description hook). These are where 80% of sellers leak rank — and where you'll gain the most by getting them right.

What this checklist will NOT fix

  • Bad photos that drive low CTR (no SEO can compensate for unappealing hero shots)
  • Pricing 50%+ above niche median (CR will tank, Etsy will demote)
  • Slow fulfillment (sub-3-day shipping is a shop quality factor)
  • Negative reviews from product/policy issues (rebuild trust first)

How often should I re-run this checklist?▼

Every 90 days for top listings, or whenever Etsy announces a major algorithm update. Most sellers re-optimize their top 20% quarterly and let the bottom 80% run as-is.

What if my niche doesn't have category-specific attributes?▼

Skip step 5 only if Etsy genuinely offers no attributes (rare). Most niches now have 5-15 attribute slots — fill all that apply.

Is 800 characters really enough for description?▼

It's the minimum. 1200-1800 chars structured well (paragraphs + bullets) is the sweet spot for both SEO and conversion. Over 2500 and shoppers skim past.
