etsy keyword researchKeyword research is the foundation of Etsy SEO. Get it right and every other optimization compounds. Get it wrong and the best title in the world targets queries nobody searches.
This guide covers the 5-step process we use to find 30+ buyer-intent keywords per product in under 15 minutes.
Why most sellers fail at keyword research
They guess. They use 'silver necklace' because it sounds right, never checking if it's actually searched or how competitive it is. Result: 60% of Etsy listings target keywords with low search volume or impossible competition.
Note
The fix: validate every keyword on three dimensions — search volume, competition, and buyer intent. Skip any one and you're guessing.
The 5-step Etsy keyword research process
Brainstorm 10 seed keywords
Write the obvious product names: 'silver necklace,' 'sterling pendant,' 'handmade jewelry.' Don't overthink — this is the starting pool.
Expand with autocomplete + related
Type each seed into Etsy's search bar. Note all autocomplete suggestions (these are real buyer queries). Then scroll to 'Related searches' at the bottom of the results page.
Validate volume + competition
Use Listomize's Keyword Research tool (free). For each candidate, see: monthly search volume, competition score, and an intent classification (transactional / informational / navigational).
Filter for buyer intent
Keep only keywords with transactional intent (buyers ready to buy: 'silver necklace gift') or strong informational intent (buyers researching: 'best silver necklace for sensitive skin'). Drop navigational ('etsy login').
Group into a hierarchy
Pick 1 primary keyword (highest volume × intent), 5-10 secondary (related variations), 13 for tags (mix of broad and long-tail). This becomes your listing's keyword stack.
Search volume: what's good?
| Volume range | Difficulty | Use case |
|---|---|---|
| 1000+ monthly searches | Very High | Established shops with reviews — only target if you have ranking power |
| 300-1000 | High | Primary keywords — your top 1-2 per listing |
| 50-300 | Medium | Secondary keywords and long-tail tag targets |
| 10-50 | Low | Niche tags — easy wins for specialized products |
| Under 10 | Skip | Not enough traffic to justify the slot |
Long-tail vs broad: which to target
Broad keywords ('silver necklace,' 1200 monthly searches) feel attractive but you're competing with 100,000+ listings. Long-tail keywords ('dainty silver layered necklace gift for her,' 80 monthly searches) have fewer competitors and much higher conversion.
Rule: pick ONE broad keyword as your primary, then build the rest of your tag stack with long-tail. New shops should be 70-80% long-tail until they have 50+ sales.
Buyer intent: the dimension nobody talks about
Two keywords with the same volume can convert at wildly different rates because of intent.
- Transactional: 'silver necklace for sale,' 'buy sterling necklace' — buyer is ready. Highest CR.
- Commercial investigation: 'best silver necklaces,' 'silver necklace comparison' — buyer is shopping. Medium CR.
- Informational: 'how to clean silver necklace' — buyer wants info, not purchase. Low CR.
- Navigational: 'etsy silver necklace shop' — buyer wants a specific shop. Don't target.
Tip
Listomize's Keyword Research tool auto-classifies intent for every keyword. Filter out informational/navigational to keep your tag slots focused on buyers.
Real example: keyword stack for a silver necklace listing
Product: handmade dainty sterling silver heart necklace.
- Primary: 'silver heart necklace' (480 searches, competition 65)
- Secondary: 'dainty silver necklace,' 'sterling heart pendant,' 'silver layered necklace,' 'minimalist heart necklace' (each 50-200 searches)
- Tags (13): silver heart necklace, dainty silver necklace, sterling silver pendant, minimalist heart jewelry, silver layered necklace, gift for her, handmade silver jewelry, sterling silver heart, dainty heart pendant, silver necklace gift, anniversary gift, birthday gift necklace, hypoallergenic silver
FAQs
How is Etsy keyword research different from Google?▼
Etsy buyers are deeper in the funnel — they're on Etsy because they're ready to buy. Etsy keywords skew transactional and product-specific. Google has more informational queries. Don't recycle Google keyword strategies — research Etsy specifically.
Should I use keyword tools or just Etsy autocomplete?▼
Both. Autocomplete gives you real buyer queries but no volume data. A tool like Listomize adds volume, competition, and intent. Use autocomplete to discover, tools to validate.
How often should I re-do keyword research?▼
Every 60-90 days for your top 20% of listings. Etsy trends shift seasonally, and new competitors enter your niche constantly. A keyword that was easy in January may be saturated by June.
